Anyone who has ever made (and tried to keep) a New Year’s resolution knows that the beginning of the year is the perfect time to hit the refresh button on our lives. Which I think is pretty awesome. But I do have to admit, while I’m all for setting goals, I find the phrase new year, new you to be incredibly disheartening.
The idea of creating a brand new version of myself has always made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I like the current me! Sure, she’s not perfect (Hi, Becca. This is your body talking. Eat a vegetable once in a while), but I don’t think I need a whole new person. Self improvement is one thing, but I still want to be recognizable in 2015!
This year I propose we do away with the new you idea. Instead, I vote we frame our resolutions or goals as this: this year, I’m going to start something new. Take a new class; start a new meal plan; book a trip you have always wanted to take. The way I see it, hitting the refresh button in January is a unique opportunity for an adventure.
And isn’t that one of the best ways to improve upon our selves, in the end? By taking risks and experiencing something for the first time? I say yes. New year, new you? Nah. The “you” you know and love, seeking a brand new adventure.
And that brings us to Don’t Panic Mgmt’s January playlist, “Adventures Abound.” We’ve put together our favorite songs about all kinds of journeys. Hopefully one of them will help inspire you to discover something new in your life in 2015.
Adventure is out there, after all. Go find yours!
