9 Steps to Spring Clean Your Business

9 Steps to Spring Clean Your Business

Spring is finally here! The days are getting warmer, the sun is shining longer, and we’re starting to believe that one day very soon, we might be able to shed our coats.

If you’re like us, you’ve got a burst of energy and the spring cleaning bug. What can’t you do? You might be working on getting your house spiffy, so why not take some time for your business too?

Here are 9 steps for spring cleaning your business:

1. Review logins and access

If you work with a team, chances are you’ve lost track of who has access to what login. Spend some time reviewing each of your accounts to make sure everyone has the access they need and remove anyone who is no longer working with you. Don’t forget to check up on your password vault and test that all of your passwords are working. It’s not a bad idea to reset them either!

3. Spruce up your website

Your website isn’t a one and done deal but don’t worry – we’re not about to prescribe a complete overhaul!

Jokes aside, it’s important to make sure your website is an accurate reflection of you right now. Is your team page up to date? How about your services and rates? Is your contact information easy to find? Do all of the links and buttons work?

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is encountering your business for the first time and make sure your website delivers the experience you’d like them to have.

3. Do a subscription audit

Do you ever discover a subscription you’ve been paying for for months and have no recollection of signing up for it?

Now is the time to take care of it.

Do a thorough audit of the services you’re subscribed to and determine if you’re using all of them. Perhaps there are some alternatives you’d like to try. Maybe you can get a better rate by opting for a yearly plan or switching your level of service.

4. Update your bios and headshots

Often business owners are so heads down getting the work done that we forget to share about the amazing things we do. We’re giving you permission to shine that spotlight on yourself!

Look back at the past few months or year and think about updates to add to your online bios and profiles. Have you started any new projects? Gotten any certifications? Had any cool speaking gigs?

If you’re feeling very ambitious, you can update your headshots too.

5. Clear out your inbox and documents

Sometimes an overflowing inbox or stack of papers can feel like a huge weight, but dealing with the virtual and physical paper trail will make you feel so much freer.

Spend some time getting to the bottom of your inbox. Make sure you have a clear system to capture everything and automate as much as you can. Don’t know where to start? Here’s our step-by-step process for doing this.

And the paper stack…We know it’s tempting to just keep shifting those piles around your office, but seriously, it’s time to deal with it. Chances are you can probably quickly scan through things and get rid of most of it.

6. Give your space some TLC

Remember your physical space as well. Studies show that people feel more productive when their space is clean and more stressed when it’s not. Executives are reported to spend six weeks of their year searching for lost items. Six weeks! That’s a lot of time.

Whether you have a dedicated office space or borrow a corner in your home, you want to make sure your environment is helping and not hurting your productivity. Remove things that don’t belong. Set up organization systems. Make your space conducive for your best work.

7. Update your SOPs

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are one of those things that you don’t need until you do. Here at DPM, we maintain our SOPs very carefully and make sure they’re updated regularly and they’ve saved us countless times!

Once you’ve started your SOP, it doesn’t take long to review and edit, and it’ll be a huge help for your team to work more efficiently and maintain consistency. If you don’t have any SOPs, that’s okay, this year is a great time to start them. We’ve got a handy guide with all of our tips right here.

8. Check in on your business plan and goals

Whether you’re crushing your 2024 goals or you haven’t set them yet, there’s still a lot of the year ahead of us to make things happen. Spend some time reflecting on your business plan and goals. Figure out what’s working and what’s not. Consider where you’d like your business to be and if your day-to-day operations are setting you on the path to get there.

9. Make sure your social media profiles are up to date

Social media can sometimes be kicked to the back burner and passed around from person to person. Don’t let that be you! It’s likely one of the first places people will go to learn about your business. Make sure your profiles are up to date and display accurate information. Sift through your posts and determine if anything should be archived.

Along with this, review your Google profile as well as any other industry-specific profiles you may have.

And that wraps up our spring cleaning checklist. Take some time to work through these things and you’ll be ready to rock the rest of the year!
